21 Day Surrender: Day 3 God is Sovereign

Three days into the fast and it feels like three months. Not because of the level of difficulty, but because the amount of revelation God is giving!

I asked God to “search me…and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts…” (Psalm 139:23) and He is doing exactly that! One area that continues to be pointed out by the Holy Spirit is about God’s sovereignty.

Sovereign means complete power and authority. There is no mistaking God’s sovereignty, for it is highlighted throughout His word:

1 Chronicles 29:11-12

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.

Psalm 115:3

Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases

Proverbs 16:9

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

Job 42:2

“I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.

Psalm 103:19

The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.

Psalm 135:6

Whatever the Lord pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.

1 Timothy 6:15

Which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,

I could go on and on, but hopefully you get the point: God is sovereign! But despite the evidence of this, why do I (lets make this personal) find it so hard at times to lean on God and trust Him completely and continuouslyI know God is sovereign, but sometimes my actions and reactions say differently.

It seems I need a reteaching on God’s mindfulness. God showed me this last year, but as life goes on and harder assignments come with more unknowns than before things get tough. Lets be honest…when facing major life decisions that could potentially change the trajectory of your life not being certain about every step is very scary.

But God is sovereign! Nothing is an accident, surprise, or coincidence for Him! He is aware of everything, past situations, present, and things to come. God has everything and I do mean EVERYTHING under His control!

God is getting me in check! I must declare that He is the director of my life and I must rest on His promises.

REST.

It sounds so easy (or foreign for some). God just wants us to rest. Chill. Relax. Calm down! He wants us to rest in the fact that He already has our (my) future sorted out. Next year, next, month, the next five minutes are in His hands. I must stop trying to micro-manage God. Stop standing over His shoulder trying to warn Him about the dangers ahead. He has already been there and back.

I must lean on the Holy Spirit as my advocate and my guide. Release the burden of thinking I must have all the answers or I must have it all figured out. God never meant for me (or you) to carry that burden. In fact, I must stop making figuring out my future an idol.

Wow. Being so obsessed and stressed with knowing every detail, trying to plan out every second is becoming an idol. Especially when God has called us to just rest.

I must rest in the truth that God chose me for this season. He preordained and predestined me for this time and this place. He set up in advance for everything that I do to bear fruit and be good. (Ephesians 2:10; John 15:15-19) He called me and appointed me for this time to do good works in order for Him to receive all of the glory!

God likes to get all of the glory, but I would too if I was the supreme creator of the universe. If I was able to be everywhere at once, knew everything, and was all powerful, yeah I would want a little credit too. But God is so deserving of that credit and more!

But with all the credit also comes all the responsibility. This can become a burden if you are not equipped to carry it. God didn’t create us to carry this burden, but we are trying to receive credit for all of this that we are also assuming all the responsibility for all of this too. But all God wants us to do is rest and trust. That is it.

All we must do is avail ourselves to Him fully and trust that He has everything already figured out.  Here we are trying to figure things out and God has already gone before us and done that. God is sovereign! He has a perfect track record when it comes to these matters; He has not failed yet and He won’t start now.

In closing consider this analogy:

Children are so trusting of their teacher. They don’t question the things the teacher tells them, nor do they stand over the teacher and try to direct the teacher on how to teach a lesson. They fully trust that everything they are being taught is good for them and will help them in the future. Even if they do something wrong and the teacher has to punish them, they go right back to trusting their teacher. They respect the space and the fact that the teacher is the authority in that space. Why aren’t we like little children with God?

God is sovereign!

21 Days of Surrender: Tips for a Successful Fast

3. Get real with God! Hold nothing back. Expose everything to Him (even if it is not so pretty). God already knows the depths of our hearts, so allow yourself to be vulnerable before Him. Completely naked. Give God something to work with.
